CENTIVE: Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) District Branding Challenge
EGD for Local Legacy: Designing Banyumas with Cultural Identity
Banyumas Regency, located in Central Java Province, covers an area of approximately 1,327 km² with a population of more than 1.6 million. The region is well known for its rich cultural heritage such as ebeg, lengger, and wayang bawor, as well as its unique local wisdom embodied in the spirit of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and the distinctive ngapak dialect. With abundant natural assets such as the Serayu River, Baturraden, and Mount Slamet, Banyumas holds strong potential for the development of tourism and the creative economy.
However, the main challenge lies in creating an inclusive and sustainable district branding — one that not only promotes tourism attractions but also preserves the environment, embraces local cultural identity, and remains relevant to both younger generations and global visitors.
Through the Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) District Branding Challenge, this competition invites the general public, design practitioners, lecturers, students, and academic staff to present innovative and sustainable district branding solutions to enhance tourism in Banyumas.
Suggested EGD Solutions for Tourism Development in Banyumas:
Wayfinding & Signage: Consistent directional systems at tourist sites, using Banyumas’ distinctive typography and local icons.
Cultural Murals & Installations: Public murals at city spaces (e.g., terminals, stations, town squares) and eco-friendly art installations that can serve as iconic photo spots and reinforce cultural identity.
Eco-Interpretive Graphic Panels: Educational panels in natural tourist areas (e.g., trekking routes) explaining local ecosystems, community wisdom, and sustainability messages, using environmentally friendly materials.
